New TV Series Real Houses of… to Air Beginning Sept. 8, 2015 on W Network

Series Represents First Joint Venture Between Saint John-Based Co-Producers,
Talons of Venice and Hemmings House Pictures

Saint John, NB – On Tuesday, Sept. 8, a new lifestyle television series will air on the W Network, Talons of Venice and Hemmings House announced today.

The series, Real Houses of…, represents the first joint venture between Hemmings House Pictures Ltd. and Talons of Venice – the content creation arm of Saint John-based marketing agency, Revolution Strategy.

“With the launch of this show, we’re showing broadcasters and networks around the world that content producers on Canada’s east coast are producing premier programming,” said Greg Hemmings, President and CEO of Hemmings House. “This has been a wonderful opportunity to showcase the creative talent force we have here in Saint John.”

Derek Riedle, Executive Producer with Talons of Venice and founder of Revolution Strategy said, “We are always looking for the next creative pursuit, and from concept to air date, we are thrilled with how quickly this series came to life. This show is proof that we can execute on smart ideas, and produce creative products for global markets from our home in Saint John.”

Fifteen 30-minute episodes of Real Houses of… will air this fall, two episodes every Tuesday night, beginning at 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. ET / PT, beginning Sept. 8 on the W Network. Episode locations will span North America, focusing on five regions: Texas, New York, Los Angeles, Western Canada and Atlantic Canada.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, Talons of Venice and Hemmings House will co-host a Real Houses of… launch party for the series at the Saint John Ale House in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The production of Real Houses of… employed a crew of about 20 full-time employees – all based in New Brunswick.

In February 2014, Talons of Venice and Hemmings House formed a partnership with CCI Entertainment to produce and distribute content for television networks in Canada and around the world. CCI Entertainment and its global sales agents also introduced the pilot at MIPCOM – the four-day, international entertainment content conference – in Cannes, Oct. 13-16, 2014.

Can Getting Kids to Code Change Our Collective Future? Code Kids Documentary Explores.

It has been almost exactly a year since we visited Estonia and Finland to film the incredible success they have found in creating digital economies and preparing their youngsters for a wild digital ride that awaits them – and all of us – not so far down the timeline. 

What we found about these two visionary countries is that in order to secure a prosperous future, we can not solely rely on natural resource and traditional industries anymore. We need to inspire a rich stock of enthusiastic, passionate, open and entrepreneurial young minds to lead us into the quickly evolving digital society. And this work needs to start as early as Kindergarten. 

Our film 'Code Kids' explores the direction Estonia and Finland took in their development and offers up the question to people who live in my region of Canada; "Can we do the same here? And if we can are we actually at an advantage being a small rural and hyper connected community then if we were elsewhere?".

Our friends at the CBC have allowed us to lift the geoblock of our film so viewers around the world can watch our film, we are very grateful for this as we want to share this film for the 'Hour of Code' week starting December 8 – 12.

We filmed Code Kids with the Atlantic Canadian community as the focal point, however the stories and the issues are universal. Please help us spread inspirations to get communities bought into the Code Kids movement by sharing this film.

Innovation Connection Between SCUBA & IPTV Technology!

What the heck did we do before 1839, the year that the SCUBA tank was invented in New Brunswick, Canada? There must have been lots of really long snorkels, and talented skin divers who could hold their breaths for epic periods of time!

As it turns out New Brunswick, the small province of less than a Million people, is the home of a ‘depth’ load of innovations and inventions that have had global impact over the years. James Elliot and Alexander McAvity gifted the world with a tank that would hold the oxygen needed for us crazy humans to explore shipwrecks and take underwater pictures of cool fish, coral and stingrays.

Fast forward over a century and a half and we see innovations happening in the very same city! The brilliant folks at Encore Interactive have built a television user experience that allows people to watch their Jacques Cousteau movies on many different platforms! How rad is that? 

So next time someone ask’s what the connection between SCUBA tanks and IPTV cross platform user experience technologies is, well now you can tell them with confidence! And you can show them this little film that the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation commissioned Hemmings House to Produce. Innovation Connections Between Toilets and Robotic Hands!

What the heck did we do before 1907, the year that the Vortex Flushing Toilet was invented in New Brunswick, Canada? Remember the cute little moon holes in the doors of outhouses? Yeah, they were pretty neat. As it turns out the Canadian province New Brunswick, the small province of less than a Million people, is the home of a ‘Crap’ load of innovations and inventions that have had global impact over the years! Did you know many argue that the origin of the word ‘crap’ refers to late 19th century plumber & innovator Thomas Crapper who invented the siphonic toilet that hosted his Crapper brand name etched into the toilet's porcelain? But we are not here to talk about Mr. Crapper’s toilet, we are here to talk about the evolution of his toilet, toilet 2.0 if you will; The Vortex Flushing Toilet! This bad boy was Innovated in New Brunswick by Thomas McAvity Stewart.

Fast forward over a century and we see evolutions of many other innovations happening in the very same province. The brilliant engineers, scientists and designers at the University of New Brunswick have evolved the prosthetic arm and hand to a point where movement of the hand is controlled by thought! How cool is that?

So next time someone ask’s what the connection between a toilet and the thought-powered prosthetic hand is, well now you can tell them with confidence! And you can show them this little film that the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation commissioned Hemmings House to produce! Coding in Schools Can Change Lives and the Economy

code kids girlThe Hemmings House documentary that is helping the ‘Coding to Schools’ movement gain momentum in Atlantic Canada will premiere this Saturday, July 26th at 8pm on CBC Maritimes. Code Kids follows a group of passionate tech entrepreneurs, students, teachers and influencers in Atlantic Canada over a period of a year as they attempt to change the way students use technology in elementary and middle school. Despite the regional focus, this is a global story that is relevant in communities around the world. The film explored how countries like Estonia and Finland are using coding and technology in the K-12 school curriculums.

Producer and Director Greg Hemmings sees this film premiere as a milestone marker for the movement. 

“The real horsepower of this movement happened as we filmed this story unfold. The finished film itself will be released to the public at a point where momentum has been achieved, I am excited to see this film used as a tool to inspire new thoughts about our education system and the future of our children’s economy.”

Jevon MacDonald, a tech entrepreneur and co-founder of GoInstant in Halifax believes that the technology economy is the first opportunity in over a century for Atlantic Canada to participate, and lead, in a high-growth and young part of the economy. 

“If we can bring the number of jobs in IT in Atlantic Canada up to the national average in proportion to the population, then we will have created more opportunity for young kids than ship building, forestry, bioscience, energy and agriculture. Making coding available in our schools gives our kids here in Atlantic Canada a fair shake in a world that otherwise wants them to labour their life away, either here or in some far off part of the country."

Tech entrepreneur, and co-founder of GoInstant Gavin Uhma recognizes that information technology is everywhere and if Atlantic Canadian shoals are not inspiring students to learn coding skills, then they are at a disadvantage.

“It's difficult to think of a job that does not involve some sort of information technology. Now, imagine the disadvantage Canada would be at if every other country taught coding in their schools. Fortunately, this is not a reality today, but is actually an opportunity. If we include programming in our k-12 curriculums, we'll be at an advantage.”

Coding advocate David Alston believes Atlantic Canada has a much higher chance of success because of the small population and supportive tech industry in the region. 

“Right now we have the edge.  Relatively speaking we have a large startup scene that other jurisdictions would love to have.  We can continue to feed this momentum by allowing students to embrace a modern skill, one that not only allows them to program the world around them, to improve it, but one that teaches them to embrace problem solving and turns on their entrepreneurial DNA. “

New Brunswick has a very unique business culture. It is not a weird thing to run into your local billionaire at a restaurant, or have a coffee with a leader of a multi million dollar enterprise. This place rocks for stat ups. The mentorship in this region is stellar, and everyone wants to support each other in success. New Brunswick is a case study that other regions should study. It is a great model for partnerships between the legacy family business and the entrepreneurial start up worlds.

I Write My Blogs in my Hot Tub

I had a bummer of a surf day today. Five of us got out today to Mispec, the waves were huge (well huge for the Bay of Fundy). They we ranging from five to 10 feet. But the wind was heavy and the period very short today with waves coming in every direction. I gassed out after trying to grab my third or forth wave. When I paddle out past the breaks and work against those waves with a strong offshore wind to boot, it for sure tests strength of mind body and spirit. So after about a half hour I bailed and headed towards shore to call it a day. But the crazy thing was that the undercurrent was so strong forcing the water back to sea that it was almost impossible for me to walk myself and my board in, despite it only being waist deep. I finally got to shore a defeated man (I chuckle as I write that statement pampering myself with a soak in my 105 degree Fahrenheit hot tub… Hoping to not drop my iPhone!)

I watched the other guys from the parking lot as I packed up… They stayed out another hour at least and caught some epic waves. As it turned out the wind died down a bit and they had a great session. Earlier on my way to the beach I was pumped , inspired and ready to tackle what ever the Bay had to offer. As I drove back I felt like I gave up to quick.

I always say “life is too short to drink bad red wine”, well I also say that about surfing in Saint John, New Brunswick… “Life is too short – and big waves too few in the Bay of Fundy – to give up so quick. If I’m in the water flat or huge, short or long, it’s a blessing to be able to ride nature this way and maybe I am too hard on myself. At least I got in!

Making Sweat Deals on Surf Boards

Today was a record breaking surf day for us in Saint John…10 surfers, (both standup and prone) ended up in the Bay of Fundy at the same time. That's no big deal anywhere else on the Atlantic Coast, but considering three years ago when I started to surf there were only four of us, it's pretty cool to see more people getting out and enjoying the waves in this untouched bit of coast line. I am a standup paddle surfer, it's how I learned, its the best form of surfing for the type of waves we have here in New Brunswick, and it's just as fun on flat water river paddling as it is surfing on 6 foot breaks. Today I took a prone (regular surfboard) long board out. Prone surfing is brand new for me and it takes a crazy amount of upper body strength and endurance. The water was freezing and I was running out of gas. My friend Joe paddled over on his 10ft Naish SUP board and offered to trade boards for a bit so I could catch a few waves with standup, which I am much more comfortable with. We swapped and I hit the waves. This board is a foot and a half shorter than my SUP board and it just carves in the waves unlike anything I have ever surfed before. For the first time I felt like I had ultimate control in our Bay of Fundy waves. Our waves are so small, and tides so volatile that it makes for a very interesting surf experience, but if you can catch rides i the Bay here, then you can surf anywhere. I have proven that. I always feel great and competent surfing in Souther California, Mexico, Florida, Hawaii and Nova Scotia, but they have consistantly great waves…there is power and speed in those waves, something we typically don't have here. But Joe's board helped me surf like I can at more solid surf spots. I was glowing, I caught my last wave and headed towards him as he was catching a good one on the long board. I yelled at him as I surfed past, "This board surfs like a dream!" He said, "Wanna buy it?"…I said "Heck yea!" and left the beach with a new 10 foot SUP surf board. There are firsts for everything but this is officially the first negotiation I have ever had during the act of surfing!

Like everything in life, doors are opened to us at all times. The door for me was to except the fact that I was gassed out on the long board and take advantage of Joe's offer to let me use his SUP board, because I did that I can now surf way sexier! Nice!

Fall is Blasting by Fast with Events & Screenings

It’s October already!!!

Fall is blasting by fast, but that’s not such a bad thing for those of us who can’t wait for the mountains of New England to get covered with snow for another ski season…right? One of the reasons September has gone by so fast for Hemmings House is because we have all had our nose to the grindstone creating cool films and photography for cool clients.

We are proud to showcase some of our work, so if you have time over your coffee break take a scroll through and watch a few videos that we have produced recently, and also learn about some of the other things we are up to. As I write this blog and emailer I am flying from Toronto to Paris to shoot a pilot for our latest TV series. I am also very excited to watch our very own Andrew MacCormack’s short film Here and Away on Air Canada’s enRoute In Flight Television! If you are flying Air Canada be sure to check it out! 

Steve and I will also be continuing down the coast to Cannes to attend MIPCOM, the world’s leading broadcast industry convention, and I apologize in advance for any Instagram photos we send of us enjoying wine and baguettes beachside on the Mediterranean!

Our latest documentary, the Boy Who Was Bullied, will air Nationally on CBC Television at 1pm. This film explores the life and accomplishments of John Peters Humphrey and his role in fighting international bullying.

This is going to be a fun night! Music NB Week is happening in Saint John so make sure you get a delegates pass and support our incredible musicians as they gather in our city to celebrate accomplishments of their art and business. Every year we find ourselves working on projects around the globe. This night we will be featuring four short films with corresponding Q&As. Brent Mason will be performing some tunes as well!

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted with proceeds donated to Uganda Venture. Please let us know if you can attend by signing in! 

'From a Broken Heart' Film Screening

  • “San Miguel”. Directed by Mark Hemmings, this film shows the beauty of one of Mexico’s best kept secrets. Photographers Mark Hemmings and James Wilson hosts annual photography workshops in this beautiful city. This film supports their efforts in supporting these workshops, and celebrating international photography. 
  • “Brent in China”. Directed by Lauchlan Ough, this film follows folk musician Brent Mason as he travels to China and collaborates with Chinese folk musicians in hopes of creating cross cultural musical relationships.
  • “Here and Away”. Directed by Andrew MacCormack, this short film tells the story of an old man living on a small island and a young woman in one of the worlds biggest cities discuss why no other place could be home. (Also screened on Air Canada’s in flight television)
  • “From a Broken Heart”. Directed by Greg Hemmings, this film tells the story of how a young girl from the village of Tabiro in Uganda and a doctor from Halifax in Canada built a bridge that has enriched the two countries. 


October 24th – 7-9pm: The Boy Who Was Bullied screening in Hampton

Our latest documentary, the Boy Who Was Bullied will be screened in Hampton, New Brunswick, the home of John Peters Humphrey! This film explores the life and accomplishments of John Peters Humphrey and his role in fighting international bullying. There will be performances, Q&A, and refreshments at the event. Come celebrate the legacy of a local hero! 

October 25th – 8-5PM: Women Reshaping the World

Women Reshaping the World is an amazing conference that Hemmings House is a major sponsor of. This conference takes place in Halifax and is one that should not be missed. Get more information for registration here.

Hemmings Vlog #1 “SURF CITY SUP”

All I wanted for Fathers Day this weekend was to take an hour an go for a surf. My wife was at work today so I spent the Saturday with my two little girls, awesome day…the sun was shining and summer is in the air. When she came home I was able to sneak out around 5:30 pm with the SUP board pre-strapped to my Thule roof rack. I checked out our regular spot at Bayshore, but it was a disappointing high tide flat. I texted Dave and he said that Cournty’s was small and breaking at the shore, probably not worth going out.


I decided to drive East and see for myself. When I arrived Joe was already in, and there was a small swell, nothing over a foot, maybe two. And the tide was almost fully up, certainly not the most perfect SUP conditions, but Joe and I went out anyway and the little rollers ended up having enough power to give us a great Father’s Day-eve Surf City SUP. The take away I learned here is to not give up the chance to live life because you are too busy waiting for the perfect conditions to present themselves. Life is fast, grab the moments – big AND small – whenever you can.
