The Challenge

When British comic James Mullinger walked away from a booming UK media career—including a television show and his role as the comedy editor for GQ—to move to his wife's hometown of Saint John, New Brunswick, many thought his career was effectively over. He was a seasoned pro in Europe but a total unknown in Canada. Worse yet, he arrived in a historic port city that was navigating a severe collective self-esteem deficit. The local mindset was often fixed on what the city lacked rather than what it possessed. To launch his Canadian career, James decided to do the unthinkable: attempt to sell out the city's massive 5,000-seat Harbour Station arena—a feat that legendary icons like Jerry Seinfeld had struggled to do. He needed a filmmaking partner to capture this high-stakes gamble and help translate his personal journey into a rallying cry for the entire region.

Our Approach

We produced City on Fire, an award-winning feature-length documentary for CBC that tracked James’s chaotic, two-year journey toward the arena stage.

Beyond the Punchlines: We intentionally chose not to make a standard, self-serving comedy special. Instead, we used James's outsider perspective as a narrative backdrop to explore the true heart, grit, and hidden vibrancy of Saint John.

Amplifying Local Visionaries: Our cameras went into the community, interviewing local progressive architects, artists, entrepreneurs, and change-makers who were actively fighting to revitalize the city. By contrasting the city’s industrial challenges with its palpable underground energy, we built a complex, deeply loving cinematic portrait of the region.

High-Stakes Arena Climax: We captured the nail-biting countdown to show night, deploying multi-camera setups to film the historic evening where James defied all odds, proved that "anything is possible," and successfully packed 5,000 screaming fans into the arena.

Strangely enough, it was actually James' comedy and his kind of really interesting perspective on this place that helped weave it all together."

The Impact

The legacy of City on Fire reaches far beyond the comedy charts. Nationally broadcast to rave reviews on CBC and CBC Gem, the film served as the definitive catalyst that launched James Mullinger as a premier household name in Canadian comedy, paving the way for his future record-breaking specials and international media brands. But the true magic of the film was its profound emotional impact on Saint John itself. By showing the city its own reflection through a premium, world-class cinematic lens, the documentary triggered a massive, long-overdue wave of civic pride. It challenged decades of regional cynicism, proved that the fringe can comfortably compete with major global centers, and transformed City on Fire into a timeless cultural touchstone that Saint Johners still point to as the moment their city remembered how to roar.
