The Challenge

On December 25, 2021, the world lost Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, a titan of conservation biology who famously coined the term “biological diversity” and spent decades proving how rapidly climate change threatens global ecosystems. His dying wish was for his ashes to be returned to Camp 41—the historic research camp he established in 1979 deep within the Brazilian Amazon. When his family prepared for this monumental, deeply personal journey, they faced a complex dilemma: how to fulfill a sacred family ritual while simultaneously ensuring Tom's final warning about ecological fragmentation wasn't lost to time. They needed a filmmaking team they could trust implicitly to step directly into their private grieving space and transform a raw, rugged jungle expedition into an inspiring, globally relevant documentary.

Our Approach

In partnership with our fellow Certified B Corp, Council Fire, and SustainaFest, we accepted the profound honor of embedded storytelling. We deployed our director and a specialized production team to journey into the heart of the Amazon, carrying out a careful, zero-footprint production under demanding jungle conditions.

Intimate, Trust-Based Filmmaking: We operated with extreme sensitivity, filming alongside Tom’s daughters and closest scientific colleagues as they traversed the rivers and scattered his ashes throughout the forest canopy. Our approach prioritized authentic, human vulnerability over rigid corporate scripting.

Cinematic Legacy Integration: To ensure the film served a dual purpose, we artfully contrasted the family's emotional journey with Dr. Lovejoy's monumental legacy. We integrated his lifetime of climate data—including his urgent warnings regarding the Amazon shifting from a carbon sink to a carbon source—framing the natural landscape as a living testament to his life’s work.

Elevated Post-Production & Distribution: Back in the editing room, we co-crafted a narrative architecture built intentionally on hope and action rather than climate despair. We then ushered the finished 24-minute documentary onto the global stage, securing prestigious official selections at the DC Environmental Film Festival, the Atlantic International Film Festival, and the B Corp Champions Retreat Film Festival.

This project is especially meaningful for us at Hemmings House. Through our 1% for the Planet commitment, we partnered with our friends at SustainaFest to co-produce a film that carries forward the legacy of Dr. Tom Lovejoy, often called the godfather of biodiversity.

The Impact

Our collaboration transformed a private family pilgrimage into an internationally celebrated tool for global environmental advocacy. Back to Camp 41 has screened before policy makers, scientists, and environmental groups across North America, actively reigniting critical dialogues surrounding biodiversity and climate action. The film serves as a core educational asset used by SustainaFest and the Chesapeake Bay Trust to inspire the next generation of climate leaders and conservationists. Most importantly, we provided Dr. Lovejoy’s family with a timeless visual legacy that honors his final wish while beautifully proving his lifelong conviction: that through community and optimization, the future of our shared planet can still be rewritten.
